She is a veteran actress with hits such as Rampur Ka Lakshman (1972), Kahani Kismat Ki (733) and Pran Jaye Par Valchan Na Jaye (1974). Before she entered film, however, she was not the same actress that would later rule Bollywood.


Rekha was a dark, overweight woman who looked ungainly compared to her peers. She was considered ugly and unattractive before she made her Bollywood debut in 1970 with Saawan Bhadon. In a conversation with a newspaper, the actress spoke out about her experiences.




Firstpost reported that the veteran actress once said, "I was called an 'Ugly Duckling" of Hindi films due to my dark skin and South Indian features. I felt deeply hurt when people compared my appearance to the leading heroines at the time. I said that I wasn't up to the task. I believed that merit was the only way to success.




Rekha became a style icon and transformed from a "ugly duckling" in the years that followed. Rekha was a long-term shopper, who had to make many dietary changes and undergo skin-lightening treatments.




Rumours claimed that Amitabh Bachchan showed Rekha how to dress well and gave her fashion tips. It was also during this time that whispers began to swirl about Rekha Bachchan and Bachchan's romance. They starred together in many films until Silsila (1981). Rekha became a fashion icon with each of the films they starred in.
