Their love story was as Bollywood-style, with love, romance and hatred, but also a happy ending. Afsar, a star of the 1940s, charmed the world with his acting and looks. He had a large female fan base.
Suraiya and Dev Anand met while working on the 1948 film Vidya. He was attracted to Suraiya's simplicity. He was open to his feelings for Suraiya and never hesitated to accept her love. According to Bollywood Shaadi's report, the star said that he and Suriya fell in love after they started working together. She was a lovely girl, who exuded warmth and friendliness. She was a star, but she had no pretenses. She was the one I fell in love with. It was my first love, and it was intense when I was young.
Suraiya fell in love with him too. She also talked about his attraction. "Sometimes later, Dev saved my life when a boat we were using for filming capsized. I told Dev, "If you hadn't saved me today, it would have ended." He said calmly, "If your life had ended so would mine." The yesteryear actress stated.
Suraiya and Dev Anand were inseparable, but their families opposed their union. The two of them decided to elope and marry during Jeet's 1949 filming. However, Badshah Begum, the actress' conservative maternal grandmother dragged Suraiya home.
The actress spoke out about the incident and said that her grandmother was able to separate them. Dev was very hurt and offended at my lack of courage. But I was afraid of him. Retrospectively, I can't believe anything would have happened if my courage had been enough. But I was afraid of my grandmother. I was devastated."
Suraiya's grandmother, who was extremely rigid, would often interrupt the shoot and refuse to let Suraiya meet Dev Anand. Suraiya's grandmother was always around, and it made communication difficult. The letter was passed on to me in the book, of course. Suraiya always believed that Love is the only religion. Social barriers and family should not influence your heart. I loved her dearly."
Suraiya and Dev Anand found a way to meet at the terrace, despite her grandmother’s caution. My grandmother was strict and became angry when Dev Anand was Hindu. At one time, she had banned me from meeting him and we had to meet secretly in my terrace. Dev would meet Dwarka Divecha, the late Dwarka Divecha, at the backstairs. While Dwarka kept my grandmother occupied in conversation downstairs, we would chat behind the water tanks. The actress stated that she was always anxious.
Although Badshah Begum opposed their union, Suraiya’s mother Mumtaz Begum supported them, but was often ignored by others. Dev Sahib stated, "Suraiya’s mother was always there for me and encouraged us." Her grandmother hated me, however.
They fought for each other's love, but failed to succeed. According to the report, the stars met on her balcony, where they cried, hugged, and then parted ways. "I wanted her to marry me, but couldn't. "I cried on my brother's shoulders and then I forgot which chapter to continue," Sanam star admitted.
Dev Anand later married actress Kalpana Kartik, but Suraiya did not get married.
