A family of middle-class people lives happily in a bustling area in Punjab. A simple shuffle of bags brings an unwelcome guest into their home, and it ends in tragedy. Their world is turned upside down when they find out that their blood is on the line. The story is about what the man will do to save the world and make his "Tabbar" live long.

Tabbar Review: How Does It Work?

Let's start by appreciating the new-age filmmakers' sensibility and striving for authenticity. We have left behind the stereotypical "sarson ke Khet" Punjab and are now looking at the raw, brutal, and sometimes even violent reality of the country. Tabbar also mentions Abhishek Chaubey, the flag bearer with his Udta Punjab.

A family can be presented in many different ways depending on how it is presented. Shows have been able to tap into the drama and importance of families in recent times. Sometimes, the conflict is emotional ( Grahan), societal( Grahan), or about love ( Gullak). What if one family member kills a stranger in order to save his family? Tabbar is Arabic for family. Tabbar is a show about a man who puts his family before all else and saves them from the evils of the world.

It's a Drishyam (AjayDevgn/Mohanlal) but 10 shades darker. Harman Wadala, the writer who also created Sandeep Jain/Mohanlal's story, tells the story of a family that in their worst nightmare never thought of harming another person. Their existence is tested and they embark on a journey for survival. Tabbar's story is a combination of a thriller, family drama and survival drama.

I try too hard not to spoil the show. Appreciate me! Tabbar is a story about a murder and how a family tries to protect themselves from being killed or taken in by the law. Deep down, Ajit Pal Singh and the writers discuss a lot more. The drug problem in Punjab, Punjabi youth who consume it, misunderstood pop culture, and the desire to conquer the world. The corrupt system and play of power are also on display.

The family is the focus in this mess. He makes plans and then he doesn't get caught. He murders people and creates fake situations. He does all this to make people feel bad, but he also wants his innocent children and his wife to be safe from the wrathful. The attention paid to consequences is what wins the battle. Depending on your perspective, every action can be either right or wrong. If one does something wrong, they must suffer the consequences. Every Tabbar character who commits wrongdoing faces it at some time. Even those you believe are innocent.

Ajit Pal Singh's direction speaks for his viewers and helps this story rise. His frames are inviting and entice you to explore the setup. You will know exactly where every drop of blood was or how the landscape worked by the end. DOP Arun Kumar Pantdey creates tension with his camera. You only see what you need to understand the scene. This gives you a feeling of being trapped, just like his characters. When he captures the essence and emptiness of the family's universe, look out for his frames.

Sneha Khanwalkar's haunting music, accompanied by Rekha Bhadwaj's beautiful vocals and Daler Mehndi’s beautiful singing, adds depth and intrigue.

Tabbar Review: Star Performance:

Pavan Malhotra is the father Omkar. This character is the basis of the entire show. His role is a big one and he has to step up. Omkar is a complex character, even though he's an actor with a lot of experience. Supriya Pathak, with all her finesse, supports Omkar and adds an emotional flavor to the show. The last frame with them together will be haunting you for a while at least.

Gagan Arora, the elder son Happy, is perfect and brings everything to the table. Sahil Mehta plays Tegi silently. He is a complex character who creates conflict in the background and does this skillfully.

Paramveer Chima, who is Lucky, has my heart in Tabbar. He portrays a cop who is forced to do things against his will, both at work and at home. While his innocence and naivety are intact, his rage to prove himself is burning within him. He is able to draw viewers in so well that they feel his absence. I found his Instagram account and was impressed by the man's voice. Brownie points.

Tabbar Review: What doesn't work:

Tabbar is not so important that you'll be able to stop watching it. Nupur Nagpal plays Palak, who is drawn into a love triangle. Despite her conflict being highlighted repeatedly until the sixth episode, her fate is forgotten by the end.

Supriya Pathak, a veteran actor, is always on the right foot in Tabbar. Her accent is a problem quite a few times. Even though the majority of the cast is Punjabi, it's not difficult to spot a non-Punjabi speaking in a different tone.

Although the backstories of the characters can be hinted at, they are not enough to add an additional layer to the screenplay. A greater emphasis could have added nuance.

Tabbar Review: Last Words:

Tabbar is not for the faint-hearted. Tabbar is all about survival. There are no easy moments as you try to survive. You will be heartbroken if you don't get involved. Stay tuned to Koimoi.
