Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, have bowed down to fellow director James Cameron since his hit Avatar regained the title of highest-grossing movie release in global box office history. Read further to know more about this Hollywood news.
The final Avengers film previously knocked Avatar off the top spot in July 2019, but thanks to a re-release in China to help raise the box office despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 2009 sci-fi epic slipped past Endgame‘s $2.79 billion takings to reclaim the top spot on Saturday (13th March'21).
By Sunday, Avatar had grossed $21.1 million (£15 million) from its weekend relaunch, raising its overall gross to $2.81 billion, and the Russo Brothers celebrated the historic achievement by posting a piece of artwork that fused Marvel's Avengers logo with that of Avatar on social media.
Russo Brothers captioned the post, “Passing the gauntlet back to you… @JamesCameron.” “Thanks for the beautiful art @Bosslogic.”
“Congratulations to @JimCameron, (producer) @JonLandau, and ALL of Na’vi Nation (Avatar fans) for reclaiming the box office crown!” Marvel Studios’ bosses tweeted.
“We love you 3000. @OfficialAvatar,” they said, referencing an Iron Man/Tony Stark quote from Endgame.
Cameron has since replied with a blue heart emoji to Marvel's congratulatory message.
Meanwhile, Avatar executives have thanked moviegoers for their continued love of the series as they wait for the long-awaited sequel to arrive next year (2022).
They tweeted, “Irayo (thank you) to our fans in China for coming out to see Avatar on the big screen this weekend!” “This crown belongs to Na’vi Nation – it couldn’t have happened without you.” (MT/DL/LOT)
