Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were deeply saddened by the passing of actor Robert Downey Jr.'s character, Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the scene where he self-sacrificed in the final fight against Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame.

The final episode of "What If" revealed The Watcher returning each member of its central team back to their respective universes. To date Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, and Gamora were killed during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Fans are unhappy that Marvel has been able to kill off Iron Man in almost every episode of "What If, which began in episode 3, with Hank Pym in episode 3 and then falling victim to the zombie invasion in episode 5, and being murdered and betrayed at the hands of Killmonger during episode 6 or being slain by Ultron during episode 8.

An interview was conducted by Entertainment Weekly, the animated series creator AC Bradley talked about getting negative feedback because she killed Iron Man in the series however, she also jokes about an episode that Iron Man was alive. She explained, "Due to the pandemic one of our manufacturing houses got hit extremely hardand they were unable to complete animation for one of our shows that was set to premiere earlier in the year. The episode included Tony along with Gamora. It was a light episode! It didn't involve murder Tony horribly in this episode I promise! A big spoiler. But I'm getting hate mail."
