According to Quint the report Nitesh Tiwari as well as Manish Hariprasad (creative head of UTV Motion Pictures) had initially imagined Dangal in conjunction with Irrfan Khan in mind since they wanted an actor that could be Hariprasad since the character is aged throughout the movie. But once the script was completed the script was handed over to Aamir Khan, and the rest is the story. The script was never sent to Irrfan Khan however.

Manish said how thrilled the duo were after Aamir Khan accepted to play the character as Mahavir Singh Phogat for the movie. Manish said, “We were on top of the world. We were unsure of what to do once Aamir agreed for the movie. We walked for about an hour at Bandstand at 2 in the evening just to relax our nerves.”

Manish Hariprasad also spoke about the way Aamir Khan offered inputs into his transformation to the role. He stated, “Aamir gave us inputs about how he could change himself. He stated that the plan was to gain 25kgs in order in order to look like an old Phogat. He also said he would let his hair grow naturally and reveal the graying. The best part was that Aamir didn’t look at his watch when he was informed that he would be playing between 50 and 55 age group.”
