Surprise at the box office, Friday's collections of Shang-Chi (and the Legend of the Ten Rings) were better than expected. Fast & Furious 9 was expected to open well, with a starting of 4-5 million. F9 actually had extended previews on Thursday, but there was not any promotion. Even diehard fans were unaware that F9 was getting an early release. Although collections were received for the film on Thursday and Friday, they were spread over two days, at 3.50 crores*. One would expect a lot more from a film this large, in terms of size, and recall value.
However, Shang-Chi, the Legend of the Ten Rings (a Marvel fantasy story), managed to surprise everyone with collections of over 3 crores on Friday. The signs were there on Thursday itself when the release plans were out in complete detail and the film was finding better showcasing than its Hollywood counterpart. The collections were also a reflection of this, and they turned out to be quite impressive.
The good news is that between the two films- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Fast & Furious 9, the exhibition sector has something to cheer about and the audiences have at least started returning to theatres.
*Estimates. *Estimates are still being finalized.
Notice: All collections are based on production and distribution sources.
