Lakdawala (76) was captured by the Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing in 2019 and then by the Enforcement Directorate in 2020. This was in connection to the land-grabbing of the plot belonging to the late writer at Khandala hill station.

He was taken to the Arthur Road Central Jail and admitted to the hospital. After being rushed to Sir J. J. He was admitted to the Arthur Road Central Jail, but he died last morning.

Abhinav Chandrachud, Lakdawala’s lawyer, requested bail in August on medical grounds. He wanted to be able to receive proper treatment at a hospital. In August, he submitted his most recent medical report to court indicating that cancer had spread to other areas of his body.

In the past, Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital had taken him to jail to check for a relapse of the cancer that had been treated around 12 years earlier.

Hiten Venegaonkar, ED counsel, had opposed the bail plea and argued that the court could instead direct the jail authorities provide the required medical treatment for the accused in custody.

According to the jail authorities, they were prepared to arrange for any treatment Lakdawala required.

He was first seized by the EOW while he tried to flee to London via Ahmedabad International Airport. He was released on bail and later was remanded in custody in a money laundering case that was registered by the ED.

EOW claimed that Lakdawala had forgeried documents in order to grab Anand's huge Khandala plot. He did this by faking signatures on papers dating back to 1949.

He was also charged with encroaching on the property of Sadhana Santacruz in 2010. However, he was later cleared.
