At the time of the tragedy, "Rust" was being filmed at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular shooting location south of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The 68-year old actor made a Twitter statement about the incident that occurred on the set for "Rust", a western he was producing.

"There are no words that can express my shock and sadness at the tragic accident that claimed the life of Halyna HUTCHINS, a wife and mother, and deeply admired colleague," Baldwin wrote, according to "Variety".
"I am fully cooperating in the police investigation to determine how this tragedy occurred. I am also in touch with her husband and offering my support to his family. I am deeply sorry for her husband and their son and all those who loved Halyna.
The Santa Fe Sheriff's Office confirmed Thursday evening that Baldwin had fired a prop gun that caused Hutchins's death, and Souza's injuries, on the set for "Rust", an independent film Baldwin is producing and acting in.
In a Friday statement, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees stated that the prop gun was capable of firing a single round. According to Variety, a prop firearm is made from rubber or resin. It cannot fire a live round. A gun that can fire blanks is called a "blank firing weapon."
On a day when Hutchins was in the news, there was a flood of anger and grief on social media. Director Adam Egypt Mortimer was able to express the sentiments of Hutchins' colleagues. He worked with Hutchins in the 2020 independent superhero thriller "Archenemy".
Mortimer wrote: "I'm so sorry about losing Halyna. It's so shocking that this could happen on a film set. She was a gifted talent, who was completely committed to art and film."
